Circuit 7 : Towards the land of Herve

This 35-minute tour will take you to the land of Herve. Your destination is the Abbey of Val-Dieu (Aubel). Going there, you will fly over Spa, the castle of Franchimont, Theux, Verviers and Battice. On your return you will pass through Thimister, Dolhain-Limbourg and finally Lac de la Gileppe.

Spa:

Spa is known for its mineral-rich thermal waters. The museum of the City of Waters exhibits the history of the city as a thermal destination. The Notre-Dame et Saint-Remacle church was built in the romanesque-rhenan style. Spa is surrounded by beautiful forests.

Theux- castle of Franchimont:

The castle of Franchimont is a medieval castle of the 11th century which was built on a spur controlling the valley of the Hoëgne and which was an important element in the defense of the principality of Liège. The castle is open to the public.

Verviers:

Verviers is the center of an urban agglomeration made up of the municipalities of Dison, Pepinster and part of the village of Polleur, with around 85,000 inhabitants. It is the second largest city in the province of Liège, making it one of the ten most important cities in the Walloon Region.

Fort of Battice: 

Located 17 kilometers from the German border, the fort of Battice was one of the first positions attacked by the German army on May 10, 1940. Its garrison was made up of 750 men and during the fighting 34 of them lost their lives. The fort can be visited from March to November, the last Saturday of the month at 1:30 p.m.

Val-Dieu abbey: 

The Abbey of Val-Dieu is a monastery of Cistercian monks located in Aubel, in the country of Herve. Five high-fermentation Val-Dieu beers are produced there, and a semi-cooked pressed cheese is marketed under the name of the abbey.

Thimister:

The town is an integral part of the Herve region and local products are made there, including cider, a specialty of the locality.

City of Dolhain-Limbourg:

The city gave its name to the former Duchy of Limburg and the province of Limburg. Today the small town is made up of two parts: on the one hand the lower town (Dolhain) with the Vesdre and on the other hand the historic upper town with the ruins of the castle, the ramparts and the picturesque Saint-Georges square with its 18th century houses and cobblestones from Vesdre.

  La Gileppe lake:

The dam takes its name from the La Gileppe river, the Hautes-Fagnes river, a tributary of the Vesdre. The dam is a hydraulic dam, inaugurated in 1878 by King Leopold II and well known for its monumental statue representing a lion. It was built at the request of Verviers wool producers who wanted to have enough pure water for their textile industries. The wall of the Gileppe dam is one of the oldest in Europe. The prime contractor was the engineer from Liège Eugène Bidaut (1808–1868). The capacity of the lake is 25 million cubic meters.
